Battlestar's #6

Now with Dollhouse canceled I’m missing Battlestar more than ever. I haven’t done much color wise in the past few weeks. This started as a doodle in the sketch book while I was watching BSG: The Plan. I was just going to throw some color on it and that would be that but then I started playing with the colors and lighting and even went into the line work and tweaked and redrew. I haven’t played with the line art on these before. Usually the line art is pencil and/or pen on paper that gets scanned then the color goes behind it. Imagine a piece of glass; draw on it with a marker then on the other side color it in with paint. I like how the color helped give dimension to her face. It has a bit more of real painting feel. I’m glad I stuck through it even though it was just for fun and wanted to be in bed 3 hours ago. I had a great time with the Punk Walkers tonight and was just a bit wired when I got home.

Zombie Cows

My friends are taking part in National Novel Writing month. Since I’m not much of a writer I’ve opted to start a web comic. I’ve been planning it out in a Moleskine storyboard sketchbook for the past few weeks. I got the idea from a cow toy my niece has. I hope I’m able to follow through with it. It’s the first time I’m coloring and lettering something sequential. I keep hoping I’ll feel better if I just get something out there.

OOOhhhhfffff!!!

No real purpose behind this one, just a figure study in Bic pen in my tiny tiny sketchbook. I’m hoping to get some freelance illustrator work so I guess I’m trying to branch out from the comic book stuff a bit. Now if only someone would write an article on the dangers of high heels.

I miss the 90's

Long time no post, so I’m going for a two for one. The New Fantastic Four was one of my favorite comic stories in the 90’s. You can’t beat the combo of Walter Simonson and Arthur Adams. I wish I put a better facial expression on the Hulk, but I’m pretty happy with the colors. The nice thing about coloring Ghost Rider is you don’t have to guess your light source. I like the dark shadow heavy Spider-man, not really how we’re used to seeing him. I hated the Wolverine but felt better after the colors.

The second drawing was from my pocket sketch book with some quick computer colors thrown in. I was unpacking and found my Tank Girl collection among some books. This is another book I loved in high school. It’s still amazing how much crazy was packed into each page. Fun all around.

Comic art

I FIGURE IT’S HIGH TIME I POST SOME SEQUINTAL ART UP HERE INSTEAD AS COMING OFF AS JUST A PIN UP ARTIST. These where for a story I was trying to write about two robots watching the last few humans on earth killing each other in a war. The problem with me is I’m not much of a writer. I think I have some good ideas I just can’t string them together. If I can find an ending I may still finish it since it was only intended to be a short story anyway.

Just a quick one today. A month or so ago I saw the Wolverine movie and though it totally made up for X-Men 3. One of my favorite stories growing up was the Weapon X episodes in the old Marvel Comics Presents with art by Barry Wisner Smith. They even mad a toy of it in the 90’s. Thinking about it now I wish I drew that cool helmet… Yeah, now you see why I draw instead of write. Off to bed.

Leech Guy

Just a quick one. This week has been hell. The company I worked for filed for bankruptcy and so I am totally out of a job. A friend of mine and his coworker spent some down time coming up with these extreme over the top killer characters. He asked me to draw a few. This is the leech guy. Not my top of the line but fun. Post more soon between job hunting. Gosh It would be great if I broke into comics soon. If I had one of those story's where things turned around at just the right time. I know there's a ton of people who have it much worse off than me but it would be nice.

Batman process.

I’ve been drawing for about 25 years give or take. There is very little I dislike drawing on. Two things I do hate drawing on happen to be, Pocket size and non-spiral sketch books. So imagine my surprise when I tried the Moleskine pocket sketch book. They are hard cover but are bound with thread not glue. So if you want to do a two page spread (as I did in this Batman piece) than you don’t have to worry about the fold in the middle. I figure good enough for Picasso, good enough for me. I fell in love with these sketch books and even if your not an artist they make great note books too. If you like to travel they make special note books for most major cities, full of history and facts. It’s really great having something to get my Ideas down on in my pockets at all times.

Sweeney Todd

I really like the inking style of this one. It was a gift for my girlfriend. I inked jut the line work and then used the paint bucket for the black spotting. It's how I try to approach inking every time now. It's fun because you don't know what its going to look like until you drop the black into it. Post some new stuff again next time.

Blast off.

Just starting out. I'm hoping to update frequently and document my breaking into comics. At this point in my life, I don't have any excuse. I have all the tools and knowledge to break in, if I don't I can only blame myself. Thanks.
